How To Grow
This USDA zone 4 hardy plant is a North American native (used as a food source by natives - never eat this plant raw - it is eaten cooked) and is quite easy to grow in either shallow water or in the very damp bog garden.
Water Depth and Planting
The plant thrives in slow or fast moving water. The easiest way to plant them if you have a mud bottom is to weight the tuber down and toss it into the pond. It will root itself.
If you have plastic or stone bottom, you'll need to plant it just under the soil surface in a container or under the smaller pebbles near the shore.
As an aside, I have also grown this plant in a home aquarium.
So the bottom line message here is that you can grow it almost anywhere as long as you give it constant moisture.
Sun or light shade will do fine.
