Ducks work well with hydroponic system
by: Kamia

We have ducks that add a high nitrogen load to our pond, but found that if we siphoned off pond water for use in watering our plants and/or through gravel beds in which we grow our veggies, then flow the water back into the pond, we get the best of both worlds -- well fertilized plants and excellent, bug-free yards. Ducks are omnivores, and will consume all the grubs, beetles and other insects they can find, so well worth the inconvenience.

fast growing plants
by: Doug Green

All of the oxygenating plants are fast growing and you'll want to grow these to help protect perennials. They particularly like vallisneria species and these will grow quite quickly after establishment. The trick if you want to keep ducks is that you'll have to consider the pond plants as part of the food source. You might want to make sure they never run out of fowl-food (available from feed stores) so the pressure on your plants will be lessened. Feeding them duck food will lessen their eating on your plants.

Having said that, I will tell you that ducks are very messy and dirty birds that will quickly make your pond filtration system work to it's maximum. Been there, done that with pet ducks. They were eventually banned from my ornamental ponds.

Good luck

Possible solution
by: Dwight

So from what I rationalize from this is to flood the pond with lots of vegetation, bottom variety particularly, and hopefull put so much that they can't eat it as fast as it will grow and reproduce. Is that the idea? This actually is an ornamental pond by our patio, of about 6500 gallons, and two ducks started out as pets, the others have decided that we must be nice people since the other two stay here, and four more have taken up residence. They have slowly tamed themselves to the point of hand feeding and following me around, so I have somewhat become attached. Any suggestions on the best types of plants for fast growth.
