County.agent's Back Yard Pool
by Nancy
(Tionesta, PA)
rainy day pool - 2008
I dug this small pool the summer of 2006, using a small shovel and wearing a net veil and sweat pants because the black fly population in NW PA was thriving. The first year I held down the liner with pavers (and it looked pretty ugly). The pool is about 4 by 5 feet and stepped down from one foot to 32 inches at the deepest. It holds approximately 130 gallons when full. I planted the earth margins with dianthus, Walker's Low nepeta, and assorted spring bulbs.
In Summer of 2007 I hauled rocks in the back seat of my Toyota Corolla from a friend's creekside property. Some ornamental grasses were added to soften up the stonework.
Last summer (2008) I added the biofilter which is a smallish (maybe 25 gallons) galvanized wash tub with an antique faucet inserted. I also purchased a 140 gph pump. Water is pumped from the deepest end up into the tub, which is planted with water celery and other aquatics and the overflow goes back into the main pool via the faucet. The sound of the water splashing into the pool is delightful - exactly what I was aiming at.
The pool's sounds can be heard from my back porch and from indoors (if the windows are open) and the pool is home to various frogs, salamanders, goldfish, and other denizens of the not-so-deep.
It's spring 2009 now and the heavy cap of ice finally melted after a very long winter season. One dead goldfish was floating on top and I've got to clean the pool up for the new season but the water lilies and other aquatics still seem to be in good shape. I hope the frogs and other creatures show themselves now that spring is finally here.
If I'd had more room, I would have made a larger pool but I have a very small backyard and am content with this small, lovely water feature. I hope you enjoy seeing it too.

Karin and Ed's fountain.

Karin's fountain
We bought a wonderful old house for a massive bargain last year. We have a big garden with massive trees and many birds.
I needed something spectacular to brighten the average picture. I designed the fountain and my husband Ed built it with the help of two young men.
The pond is 1 metre deep and we have big koi fish in the pond. The pond holds about 9 000 litres of water.
I am hoping that the red roses around the pond will soon make a dense hedge.
We put some white cement benches under the trees where we often relax.

Larry & Karen's Pond Illinois
by Larry & Karen
(Pekin, Illinois USA)
Our pond is about 15ft x 24ft and about 3.5ft at it's deepest point. It has a multi tiered waterfall and is home to several koi. At least 4 frogs have also moved in and are enjoying there new home.
We completed our pond July 4th 2008 after much research and the help of your e-book. We built it entirely ourselves and enjoy it very much. It includes a skimmer, bio fall filter, and 4000 gph pump.
Doug says "Super!" - and I'm so glad the e-book helped in this obviously amazing pond.

front yard pond
actually is my front yard......it was a flower bed but seemed a little boring to me so the wife and i decided to do a pond and after a torn liner and redoing it a couple times this is what we ended up with. Adding a few more flowers and some pond plants is next but all in all it was a blast to do.
