hello i am trying to grow lotus seeds many have mushed and the plant died. so i put one in my aquarium that has a heater. the problem is it is surrounded in this clear film that is almost 1/4 in thick. does it have a fungus on it? should i continue to grow it or just toss it like the others? still have one growing in a huge glass but the white part of the seed mushed up so i threw it away

Doug says the clear "film" is likely a fungal mass of some kind. You could try cleaning it off but do follow the directions for starting lotus seed here.

Hi. You MUST change the water daily when growing lotus because bacteria will occur and kill the plant if the water is allowed to set. So change water daily and before seed sprouts give the seeds a little shake. This helps them germinate. If the seedlings have emeraged. Remove them to change the water because they are tender at this stage. Continue with adding fresh water daily until the leaves emerge. Remember to make sure the water debth is the SAME as the lotus final planting area because once the leaves reach top water they NO LONGER TOLERATE WATER DEBTH DIFFERENCES. So if your lotus will be moved to a bucket with 6 inches of water make sure you grow her in six inches of water. I grow mine in a bog with 12 inches of water so when I'm growing the seed I make sure AFTER the seedling energes she is also put in 12 inches of water. This will insure when I transfer my plant the debths will be the same.sounds like to me that if you start the water changes your lotus will be fine. The film on the water is a bacteria film. The water changes prevent that from occuring!

through my experience , once lotus seeds have absorbed water, they swell and in return let out that clear cloudy film as u mentioned.. when i was supplied lotus seeds from an ebay seller, (from thailand) i was also sent a set of instructions..

though to have successfull lotus growing from seed , you need to start off with a large quantity ( for a higherchance of seeds sprouting and developing) and change the water every day by warm water using filltered and boiled water ..
