I have string algae this year

Last year was the first year for our pond and had no trouble controling the string algae. I am wondering if it has anything to do with the 6 plants, 3 frogs and 5 fish I now have. The pond is about 8x8 with a fall in it.

Doug says that once established or introduced into your pond, this algae requires regular control. And the more "waste" from frogs/fish/feeding etc you have, the more algae you'll have. Lots of babies there to add to the biological load. :-)

Short answer is that yes, the critters and the by-products or feeding do help algae. I have written about algae with links on this page so check those control pages out.

String algae

Horsehair, String algae, blanket weed, whatever it's called is a pain. It clogs the filters, and just looks totally gross. But, it's actually GOOD for the pond. It cleans out all the bad Nitrates from the water, and adds oxygen as a by product. I have found the more sunshine, the more algae, which is why it gets worse in winter, when the deciduous trees drop their leaves.
