Lotus Seed Harvesting and Germinating

We have a lotus plant in our pond and have had 2 flowers open (they are beautiful) The pods are drying and we want to try and plant the seeds in the pods and start new Lotus plants. Anyway - do we cut the stem down to the base or do we just cut off the pod? And then what kind of dirt do we plant the pod seeds in to get new Lotus growing?
Thank you

Doug says that as soon as the seed pods dry, you can harvest the seed and then follow the directions here for germinating and getting them to start growing new plants.

Good luck - let us know how it works out

lotus not seeding

No pollination happened - so you're either missing the pollinating agent (insect, wind or some other factor that I'd have to research) or you created an environmental condition that prevented this from happening. Plants that do or don't set seed can be an interesting challenge in the gardening world - a lot of variables there. Unfortunately, too many to figure out from your post.

problems with seeds!!

I have a lotus its an Asiatic Alba big white lotus. I grew it from a tuber I got this past year and it grew well, I fertilized it and I got about 5 blooms from it. I wanted to collect the seeds but instead of them drying out and hardening they shrivel up and disappeared. Why would this happen? is there something I need to do to ensure the seeds fertilize and grow?

Lotus plants grown for roots (food)?

I'm interested in growing lotus varieties that are used in Japanese cooking. The ones I've seen are 6-9" long. Which lotus types should I try? (Of course, we'll love the flowers in our water garden, too! :-)
