Natural Pond

We have an underground stream which feeds our pond, about 7000 gallons (I think). The pond is a big hole in the ground, no liner, does not need filtration or any care. Bruce is our 20 inch koi, king of the pond. We also have about 20 other koi, shubukins, and goldfish, roughly 6-8 inches long, and they spawn regularly. Right now there are about 100 babies. The fish really like hanging out under the overhanging vegetation and they also like to nibble at it. In the winter the fish hibernate in the mud. It is a healthy environment for them and we really enjoy watching them feed, spawn, and swim about.

My Deck Pond

My Deck Pond
I'm not able to afford an large pond, so I made a deck pond from a large weather resistant plant pot (no hole in bottom) and placed it on my deck. It's approximately 22-inches in diameter and 20-inches deep.
It has a small solar pump/filter, which I lifted and hid with multi-sized Terra cotta pots and trays. It has water lettuce, one water hyacinth, duckweed (which I got free), and I also placed some anacharis on the bottom. The plants came with some tadpoles (both black and brown), and snails. It also accommodates two fantail goldfish, which seem to be the happiest fish I've ever seen.
The fountain only works when the sun is on the solar panel, but it seems to be enough to circulate the water and help aerate and filter it along with the plants. I do partial water changes once a week, like you would for an aquarium, and it seems to be doing well.
I enjoy sitting on my deck listening to the water or feeding the fish if they need it (usually, they don't) and watching the tadpoles grow bigger. I think the small things in life can be the most enjoyable.

Lily pond and Gazebo
Our backyard is intensly planted and landscaped. We overlook this garden area from a raised deck. We have a fantastic view of Mt. Rainier from this deck, so it is a great place to relax and entertain. The lily pond with water falls is a main feature.

Florida Paradise

One view of Paradise
We have 2 acres in a subdivision that was completely barren, except for some trees. One project led to another and we have a paradise now of stone patios and pergolas and especially the water features. Most of the 2 A is now either a shade garden, rose garden or fish pond.

My modern pond

Simple and Modern
This is my 4th pond over the years. This time I went simple and modern. It is 8x8 and 20 inches deep. Here in South Carolina the fish do fine during the winters. I do have two bubblers going and the waterfall goes year round.
