Red Algae on Rocks
We have a free flowing waterfall in our front yard. There is no free standing water. It is surrounded by healthy plants. The rocks have become covered with what appears to be red slimy algae. This has occurred over the last 2 - 3 weeks, and has not been there before. Any suggestions on how to get rid of this. Thank You.
Doug says that algae comes in a variety of colours and you've found a red one. A manual scrubbing is one option and likely the best. Cleaning out the pond (lowering the water level) in the fall and doing this is another.
Depending on fish levels and your attitude around chemicals, you can also wipe out all algae in pond with chemicals (I don't do this). It is a short term solution.
Algae thrives in alkaline water so you might want to investigate your water quality and adjust it accordingly.
Algae also thrives in water that has been well-fertilized so if you're overfeeding your fish, now's a good time to slow this down.
But on average, a general scrubbing and vacuuming of the pond will bring this under control
