Water lillies taking over the pond

How do I stop water lillies from taking over my pond?

Doug says you dig them up and divide them. You give the excess roots away to friends (or build another pond) and you replant the slightly smaller roots.

That's what water lilies do when they're happy - they grow like stink. :-)

not natural watercourse advice
by: Doug

The advice here is for a backyard pond and not a natural watercourse.

Sorry, but I think Mother Nature does a much better job of this kind of thing than anything I can suggest. I'm not interested in clearing out natural areas.

Having said that - removing the leaves of any plant on a consistent basis will eventually kill it.

Dig them up?
by: Anonymous

Do you know how hard this is? I just spent yesterday trying for one afternoon to "dig up" some of the water lilies in the river. I think I may have been able to pull up one root. And, by the way, it was as big as my arm! there has to be a better way to rid the riverbed of these pests! Will they drown if I cut off the leaves?
